Making Sense of Texts: EFL Students’ Intercultural Competence and Interpretation Depth

The study is aimed at exploring Master’s students’ sense-making of various second language (L2) texts and its correlation with interpretation depth the intercultural competence. significance this research lies in fact that it provides an insight on culture-specific issues challenging for advanced proficient Ukrainian learners English when they make sense L2 vocabulary, interactions, public, mass social media discourse. based a questionnaire open-ended questions filled by forty students. subjects were asked to interpret several vocabulary items, idioms, linguistic landscape signs as well texts. findings suggest competence rests information obtained from textbooks current content. When facing ambiguity or uncertainty, students tend show lack cultural awareness resort first (L1) assumptions their sense-making, which may entail wrong inaccurate understanding. reveals insufficient background knowledge culture, does not lead inaccuracies but prevents comprehensive understanding messages. argues majoring need enhance awareness, develop be prepared continuous learning schemata.
